Public Bus

The public bus is easily the cheapest way to get to Cahuita.  It might not be the fastest or most comfortable, but the price is unquestionably the best of all the transport options.  The journey is usually about four hours long with a fifteen-minute break in Limon, about three quarters of the way into the journey.

Where to get the bus

Direct bus: The direct bus leaves from the Atlantico Norte Bus Terminal in San Jose between Avenida 9 and Calle 12.  Taxi drivers will know the terminal as the old or  ‘Antigua Terminal de San Carlos’ and won’t know the streets.

Change in Limon Alternatively, take the Route 703 bus to Limon and change for the local bus to Cahuita.  This may work for you if the direct bus is full and you don’t want to wait for the next one, if your budget is very tight and it helps to save a couple of dollars, or if you want to see the Port of Limon on your way down to Cahuita.  If you do want to visit Limon, there is a baggage office in Limon’s MEPE bus station opposite the Big Boy Baseball Stadium (Yes, that is the real name, isn’t that fantastic?) to leave your bags while you look around.

The Limon buses leave from the Caribenos Terminal in Tibas, just behind the Children’s Museum.  There are some double decker buses which give a fantastic view of your journey.  Buses to Limon are generally newer than the direct buses to Cahuita and might be more comfortable — think a/c, movies and less bumping.
